James: a new restaurant in Italian Market
This evening I went to James, the new restaurant where Michael's restaurant used to be on 8th, just before Christian. I first noticed the beautiful logo on the sign that they posted outside a couple of weeks ago. I keep looking in every day as I drove past it, awaiting its' opening night. Well, that happened last night. Today I was reading Philadelphia Magazine, and read that it had been opened for a month. I knew this not to be the case. I figured that it was possible that it was opening soon however, so this evening, I drove past it on my way home from renting movies and saw candles flickering through the window. I pulled into the first available parking spot and inquired about getting a table. This was their second night opened and they were fully booked. Seeing as I could not get a table, the lounge was the next best option.
Sitting in front of a warm, cozy fireplace, I proceeded to have one of the best meals that I have had in a very long time. For me, this is incredible. I had the gnocchi, in a cheese sauce made with cheese grown in a cave in Tuscany. It was the lightest, most amazing gnocchi that I could have imagined. The flavors were perfect, as was the texture. They melted in my mouth. The rustic Italian bread and butter with chunks of sea salt in it were the perfect companions.
I proceeded on to have a bittersweet chocolate placed on top of a thin slice of baguette coated in olive oil and lightly fried, with sea salt sprinkled on top. Beautiful contrast of salty and sweet, and they combined perfectly.
Even the cappuccino was a delight to my taste buds.
I have already made a reservation for Friday evening with my parents to share this gem with them. I know they are going to appreciate it.
I would encourage everyone in the city to try this restaurant. For its' second evening open, to have a meal as balanced and glorious as this one is quite an accomplishment. I can only say that I am thrilled to live only a block away!
